now after unpacking and sorting and emptying boxes for a few hours and then growing tired of it and pausing and then laying back and watching some tv and then napping for a brief few moments and then waking to enjoy the giggles of enlightenment (or something like that), i stumbled upon the reason i started sorting through the boxes in the first place earlier tonight and that was to find the external hard drive so i could back up the files on this laptop...
so i'm doing that now... this entry will chronicle the process... first, the documents folder... a bit over 16 gigs... it says there's 13 more minutes to go (and it's been going on about five minutes so far)... next, the photos and music and videos folders (which will likely take longer)... and just as it reached 1 minute remaining, it suddenly jumped up to 5 minutes remaining, then 10 minutes remaining, and 13 and now, 17 minutes remaining and it continues climbing... huh?... and the speed of the transfer keeps going slower... what's the deal?... and then, a minute or two later, at the same transfer speed, the minutes diminished quickly and the transfer was completed (with a few files not transferred for technical reasons)...
and now, the videos... almost 14 gigs... it says 10 minutes from now... and after 11 minutes, the video folder was transferred... next up, the pictures folder... just over 2 gigs, yet it says 30 minutes... must be the number of files (over 10,000) and folders (81) not the total size of all the files... the video folder contained just 3 folders and 385 files... though the documents folder had 240 folders and over 5,000 files, so there's a puzzle... maybe it's the type of file... anyway, it's finally transferred and now, the music... more than 40 gigs, about 500 folders and 6,000 files... and i am bored with the keeping track of this time stuff deal... i mean, time is relative, remember?... ah, the previous entry laughs while we giggle...
what i am considering doing is deleting a lot of the files in the pictures and videos and maybe music folders to see if that might speed up the computer and help kaspersky scan faster... maybe i will leave the music... but i can access any of the files from the external disk most anytime i want to, so we shall see... whatever i decide to do, at least everything will be backed up...
anybody know what is in the appdata folder?... i mean, more than 131,000 files and i didn't consciously create and don't knowingly directly access any of them... just about 7 gigs, but still, why so many files?... and then kaspersky tells me it scans more than a million files when it does a full scan... is that relatively normal for a pc with ms vista?... so much to learn about computers, but for the moment, the curiosity is not strong enough to search for the answers... perhaps another time... or perhaps someone with the computer knowledge will answer the questions and educate me...
are we having fun yet? :)

musical distractions
If people had visible signs or meters that told something about them, what would you want it to tell you?
dumb poll (above), smart responders
all the previous poll votes were somehow erased, so, nevermind... ironically or coincidentally or whatever, the results were very close in practical numbers to the results above shown with just three votes, if you understand the mathematics behind that extrapolative reasoning... i will probably remove the poll at some point... it is a ridiculously useless feature...
SEARCH ME
the thing is, with my tendency to babble and meander and whine and allow distraction to take the lead more often than not, even in this blog that sort of meant to merge brevity with focus like some bloggers do, searching for key words does not always lead to specific information about the subject of that key word... but... here is a start at an easy way to search for key words in this blog... use the search box at the top of the blog to search for words not listed here... if ya wanna, that is... and feel free to suggest words to add to this search shortcut section... click on the words below :)
